Clare Sullivan

Through drawing, the oldest documented form of communication, I bring together the ancient and the contemporary, the actual and the virtual.

Initially using the modern mediums of photography and film I capture the essence - as I perceive it - of the actual, be it in places or in people. This essence is then re-presented through graphite marks on canvas or paper, that most traditional of mediums. The modern, the virtual are infiltrated into my drawing through pixelation created by building and erasing of hand-drawn squares to present structures suggestive of digital imagery. This organisation of line and form results in images redolent of both our own age and of ages long past. Tone provides an echo of the fragility and ephemerality both of our environment and of the human condition.

By subverting the ubiquitous “instant gratification” of the modern digital media my images repay an investment of time, inviting the viewer to pause and ponder, to seize and savour a captured moment in our ever changing world.
